The First National LGBTQ+ Museum in the United States

A safe, welcoming place that inspires and promotes understanding.

Through collecting, we preserve and share the history and culture of the LGBTQIA+ community and our significant contributions to society.

Stonewall National Museum, Archives, & Library (SNMAL) operates one of America’s leading gay archives
and the Stonewall Library remains the
largest LGBTQ+ collection in the world.

Stonewall presents exhibitions, programs, workshops, and discussions connecting members of our community to a wide variety of ideas and perspectives.

ON THE SHOULDERS OF HEROES - DIGITAL HISTORY HUB

Join us for an abridged history of Bear identity and culture in the LGBTQ+ world — including a few things you may not know.

The term “Bear” first appeared in a gay context in 1966 Los Angeles, long before it became widely recognized. Over the next two decades, scattered pockets of community slowly found one another, weaving together a culture that had existed quietly in bars, backrooms, and friendships. What emerged was a vibrant, affirming space where people who once felt isolated could finally see themselves reflected and celebrated.

Come learn how those early threads grew into a powerful movement of belonging, visibility, and pride.
