On this unforgettable night, we proudly honor JON STRYKER, one of the global LGBTQ+ movement’s most visionary, generous, and steadfast champions, and THE HONORABLE BARNEY FRANK, whose more than 30 years of fearless leadership in the U.S. Congress transformed the landscape of LGBTQ+ rights in this country and JANIS IAN, a trailblazing artist whose voice, activism, and unapologetic authenticity have inspired generations.
Together, Barney, Jon, and Janis join the distinguished ranks of our Standing on the Shoulders of Heroes traveling exhibition — a testament to their legacy, their brilliance, and the countless lives they’ve uplifted.
Join us for cocktails, dinner, conversation, and community.
Jon Stryker is one of the global LGBTQ movement’s largest and most committed donors and advocates. In 2000, after coming out as a gay man in his 30s, Stryker, an architect and species conservationist founded the Arcus Foundation based on his conviction that people can live in harmony with one another and the natural world, as expressed in the foundation’s tag line.
By 2025, Stryker, through the foundation and other giving, had already contributed more than $600 million to social and environmental justice causes; also by that time, Arcus had contributed more than $250 million to LGBTQ-related work and led a successful, groundbreaking initiative to promote greater philanthropic support of transgender activism. The impact of Arcus’ grantee partners is evident around the globe, from North and Central America to Africa, the Caribbean and beyond, where grantee partners have played key roles in decriminalizing homosexuality, winning legal protections for LGBTQ people, and supporting organized religions in increasing the inclusion of LGBTQ people. In addition to his support of the movement through the Arcus foundation, Stryker and his husband, Slobodan Ranjelović, have contributed many millions to important LGBTQ causes, including the ACLU’s LGBTQ & HIV Project and Stryker’s endowment of the Audre Lorde Visiting Professorship at Spelman College, the first-ever queer studies chair at a historically black college or university (HBCU). In alignment with his holistic commitment to justice and his passion for the conservation of nature, Stryker has made contributions to species conservation efforts on par with his LGBTQ-related philanthropy and is a Patron of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
Barney Frank is one of the most influential openly LGBTQ+ elected officials in United States history. Born in Bayonne, New Jersey in 1940, he began his public service career in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1973 before winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980, where he served the 4th District of Massachusetts for more than three decades.
Frank made history in 1987 when he came out publicly, becoming the first member of Congress to do so voluntarily. His announcement marked a turning point for LGBTQ+ visibility in national politics and helped pave the way for future generations of openly queer public servants.
During his tenure in Congress from 1981 to 2013, Frank became known for his sharp intellect, legislative skill, and unwavering advocacy for civil rights. He rose to national prominence as Chair of the House Financial Services Committee from 2007 to 2011, where he co‑authored the landmark Dodd‑Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, reshaping financial regulation in the wake of the 2008 economic crisis.
Throughout his career, Frank was a consistent and outspoken champion for LGBTQ+ equality. He fought for anti‑discrimination protections, HIV/AIDS funding, and the repeal of policies that targeted queer service members and federal employees. His leadership helped shift the political landscape toward greater acceptance and legal recognition of LGBTQ+ people across the country.
Frank retired from Congress in 2013, leaving behind a legacy defined by courage, candor, and transformative public service. His impact continues to resonate across movements for economic justice, democratic accountability, and LGBTQ+ rights.
Janis Ian is a Grammy-winning singer‑songwriter, author, and lifelong advocate whose fearless voice has shaped American culture for more than five decades. Born Janis Eddy Fink in 1951 in Farmingdale, New Jersey, she emerged as a prodigy of the 1960s folk scene, writing her first major hit, “Society’s Child,” at just 15 years old — a groundbreaking song confronting the taboo of interracial relationships during a volatile moment in U.S. history.
Her career reached new heights with “At Seventeen,” the 1975 classic that topped the Billboard charts and earned her a Grammy Award. The song became an enduring anthem for anyone who has ever felt unseen, cementing Ian’s place as one of the most emotionally resonant storytellers of her generation.
Raised in a politically active family deeply engaged in civil rights work, Ian’s artistry has always been intertwined with social justice. Her music, writing, and public advocacy consistently challenge norms, uplift marginalized voices, and illuminate the complexities of identity, vulnerability, and resilience.
Across more than 50 years of touring, recording, and writing, Ian has remained a singular force — blending poetic honesty with cultural courage. Her recent documentary, Janis Ian: Breaking Silence, celebrates this legacy and introduces her to new generations of admirers.
A proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, Ian has used her platform to champion equality, artistic freedom, and the power of truth-telling. Her work continues to inspire audiences around the world, affirming her place as one of the most influential and beloved singer‑songwriters of our time.
