Robert Kesten
President & CEO, Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library

Robert Kesten is a global advocate for human rights and democratic values, with a career defined by bold action and lasting impact. He has helped shape constitutions, advance LGBTQ+ rights, and produced award-winning educational media—all driven by a belief in justice, equity, and the power of history to inspire change.

Kesten played a pivotal role in drafting Ghana’s Constitution and was instrumental in Ukraine’s path to independence. His advocacy led to the decriminalization of homosexuality in Ukraine, making it the first Soviet Republic to take that step. In the U.S., he produced events for the nation’s first AIDS day treatment center, championing health equity and support for marginalized communities. His Holocaust documentary, filmed on location in Poland, earned critical acclaim for its unflinching educational approach and commitment to remembrance.

At Stonewall, Kesten brings this global vision to the preservation and elevation of LGBTQIA+ history. His leadership is focused on expanding educational programs, deepening community engagement, and building inclusive initiatives that reflect the full spectrum of LGBTQIA+ experiences. With a strategic eye and a passion for justice, he is positioning SNMAL as a national leader in historical preservation and cultural advocacy—ensuring that the lessons of the past inform a more equitable future.
