Stonewall – Reenactment June 29th (28th, 1969) 2024 – Steven Shires (smugmug.com)
Mark your calendars for next year’s date – June 28, 2025
Hundreds from South Florida joined together to make history at the world’s first reenactment of
the Stonewall Uprising, which took place on June 28, 1969. Dozens of bar patrons danced the
day away in the recreated Stonewall Inn Bar that fills the museum space, while others milled
about on “Christopher Street”.
The crowd came together as “police” (Stonewall interns) “raided” the bar and arrested many patrons while others escaped and informed the crowds on the street of what was going on inside the bar. As the police escorted the arrested out onto the street, the crowd converged, and the police retreated into bar.
Then, a recently arrived Marsha P. Johnson (portrayed by Peabody Award-Winner Kristin Lovell) addressed the crowd chanting “Who’s street? Our Street!” and other give and take with the growing West Village residents. Faux bricks were symbolically thrown to the cheers of the crowd.
This Project was made possible by a collaborative grant from the Community Foundation of Broward and The Our Fund Foundation.
