About the Film

Letter to Anita is a powerful documentary directed by Andrea Meyerson that examines the personal and political fallout of Anita Bryant’s infamous 1977 “Save Our Children” campaign. Through the story of Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a Florida mother who lost custody of her children after coming out as a lesbian, the film exposes the devastating human impact of Bryant’s anti‑gay crusade.

Narrated by Emmy‑nominated actress Meredith Baxter, the documentary traces Sanlo’s journey from heartbreak to activism. It follows her transformation into a leading LGBTQ advocate, her work during the AIDS crisis, and her eventual act of healing: writing a letter to Anita Bryant decades later. Blending archival footage, interviews, and intimate storytelling, A Letter to Anita reveals how one woman’s loss helped spark a lifetime of resistance and community leadership.
